Early History of Quaid-e-Azam University :
Quaid e azam university is Pakistan’s first and largest public university. It was established in the city of Islamabad, Pakistan on 20 October 1951. The university was founded on the initiative of then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Liaquat Ali Khan who wanted to create a world class institution of higher education in Pakistan. Dr. Nazir Ahmad, the first Pakistani Nobel Laureate in Physics proposed Quaid e Azam as the name for the university. He had long been lobbying the government with this proposal even before it became an issue of national debate after 1947. Dr. Ahmed persisted by saying we will make them proud. He died just before he could see his dream come true when finally Pakistan got its first university and it was named after him.

Pre-Partition:
The first institute of higher education in Pakistan, Quaid e azam university was established on October 1, 1943 by an Act of the Pakistani Legislature. Prior to the Partition of British India, it was known as the University of Dacca (or simply Dacca). It was founded as a secular institution and emphasized modern sciences. The university’s founder Agha Shahi is believed to have modeled it on American universities like Harvard and Yale. In 1947, following independence from Britain.
Pakistan’s government made Urdu the language for teaching in all public universities. As a result Dacca became Pakistan’s only English-medium university. Its autonomy at the time not just gave it top status but also permitted professors from abroad to teach there. But when Bengali nationalist Awami League came into power after winning East Pakistan’s 1970 election, they renamed it Bangla Academy and insisted that Bengali be taught alongside Urdu.
Though this didn’t affect students too much, the emphasis shifted towards commerce subjects and social sciences. When civil unrest broke out between Bengalis and Punjabis in 1971 following a military crackdown on protesters, the Pakistani army took over the campus to maintain order; with local staff remaining stranded due to restrictions placed by martial law orders imposed by then President Yahya Khan which prohibited movement without passes issued at checkpoints surrounding Dhaka city limits.
